One piece of legislation that’s been introduced in the Minnesota legislature that had flown under the radar concerns a safety issue that a Mankato Democrat says, “Is just nuts.”

Mankato D.F.L. State Representative Jack Considine.

Representative Jack Considine has signed onto a bill that would require rail carriers to operate with a minimum crew on board or face criminal penalties.

“That’s just a flat-out safety thing,” he said, “Some of the railroads are trying to cut down to like one person on a train. What happens when that person has a heart attack or has some sort of an accident?”

The proposed requirement would apply to both freight and passenger trains operating in Minnesota.

The fine would be $250 for a first-time violation and $1,000 for each one after.
