The Renville County Sheriff’s Office said several stranded people were rescued from vehicles during Thursday’s blizzard.

Sheriff Scott Hable explained that after sunset travel became often impossible on highways and roads county-wide and deputies and other area agencies spent hours trying to get to many drivers that were stranded and take them to safety.

All shelter options in Olivia were full and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz declared a peacetime state of emergency and ordered the National Guard Unit in Olivia to help rescue drivers with their specialized vehicles and equipment, and also to open the armory as a shelter for those stranded.

Hable said two separate missions on Highway 71 north of Olivia rescued a total of eight people and the armory provided emergency shelter for 18.
